Washington (CNN) – Congress isn’t getting a glimpse of what’s on President Barack Obama’s Blackberry – or any more internal White House communications related to the bankrupt solar company Solyndra, which received a $535 million loan guarantee from the federal government.

House Republicans investigating the loan controversy had requested all internal White House documents about the issue. House Energy and Commerce subcommittee chair Rep. Cliff Stearns said that includes emails on the President’s Blackberry.

On Friday the White House Counsel sent a letter to the House Energy and Commerce Committee explaining they won’t comply with the request because it “implicates longstanding and significant institutional Executive Branch confidentiality interests.”

The response is hardly a surprise given past administrations’ refusal to comply with similar congressional requests. The difference here? President Obama is the first Chief Executive to carry a Blackberry, so it’s the first time a White House counsel has – even indirectly – turned down an attempt to peek at his email. Neither the Blackberry nor his personal email is explicitly mentioned in the letter.

On October 5, Republican Chairmen Fred Upton and Cliff Stearns requested “all communications among White House staff and officials related to the $535 million loan guarantee to Solyndra” because they believed “the White House was closely involved in the monitoring of the Solyndra loan guarantee after it was issued.”

They said these documents are necessary “to better understand the involvement of the White house in the review of the Solyndra loan guarantee and the Administration’s support of this guarantee.’

In her letter Friday, White House Counsel Kathryn Ruemmler said, “the three federal agencies most directly involved in the Solyndra loan guarantee, the Department of Energy, the Office of Management and Budget and the Department of the Treasury, are all cooperating with the Committee’s investigation into the Solyndra loan guarantee.”

Together she says the three agencies have turned over 70,000 pages of documents and are continuing to do so “on a rolling basis.” The letter states the White House has turned over another 900 pages related to communications between the White House and Solyndra, its representatives and investors. She offers to cooperate further with the investigators.

CNN has attempted to reach the Chairs of the Energy and Commerce Committee for comment. Expect some kind of political fallout.

Solyndra is a California solar panel manufacturer that had received $535 million in federal loan guarantees before it was forced to halt operations and file for bankruptcy at the end of August, putting more than 1,000 workers out of work.

Before its failure, the company had been touted as an example of the benefits of creating green jobs by the Obama administration. But since then, it has become the center of congressional criticism and a probe by the FBI.

Brian Harrison, the CEO of Solyndra, resigned Wednesday amidst the scandal.

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration Friday pulled the plug on a major program in the president’s signature health overhaul law – a long-term care insurance plan dogged from the beginning by doubts over its financial solvency.

Targeted by congressional Republicans for repeal, the program became the first casualty in the political and policy wars over the health care law. It had been expected to launch in 2013.

“This is a victory for the American taxpayer and future generations,” said Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., spearheading opposition in the Senate. “The administration is finally admitting (the long-term care plan) is unsustainable and cannot be implemented.”

Proponents, including many groups that fought to pass the health care law, have vowed a vigorous effort to rescue the program, insisting that Congress gave the administration broad authority to make changes. Long-term care includes not only nursing homes, but such services as home health aides for disabled people.

Appears the stench will be too bad, chuckle. 

I myself will still go to Raleigh.  Being outnumbered by the US Democratic National Communist Party is nothing new for Patriots standing against the “99 %”, if you catch my drift.

We will be peacefully infiltrating this event with a few non-violent surprises.  It may be a hopeless attempt, but just maybe we can get a few of these misguided college students to see the light that our founding fathers were well aware of.

This is a “no-brainer” – History has always revealed when socialist programs are begun, even with the best of intentions, Communism and dictators arise when events in any country result in economic suffering. 

Don’t get me wrong. I actually agree with some of what “Occupy Wall Street” is fighting for, except it should be directed at the Federal Reserve and the many corrupt political leaders from “both” parties and including Federal agencies which were never intended to have the power they’ve obtained today.  Our Federal government needs to be reminded that we are citizens of this great Republic, not subjects!

Is your 401(k) safe from the tax man? That’s a question that might be worth asking, as the congressional “supercommittee” scrambles to find $1.5 trillion in additional deficit cuts.

In September, the Senate Finance Committee held a little-noticed hearing that explored changes to retirement plans — principally employer-sponsored 401(k)s — that would in one way or another cut their tax deductions.

The tax breaks’ size makes them a tempting target for lawmakers. According to the White House budget office, tax exemptions for 401(k)s and IRAs will “cost” the government more than $436 billion over the next five years.

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., complained that “in spite of the tremendous tax preferences,” Americans aren’t saving nearly enough for retirement.

Critics say the existing system benefits mostly the rich. The liberal-leaning Tax Policy Center calculates that 80% of these tax “expenditures” go to the top 20% of earners. Such people “would almost certainly save for retirement even without tax incentives,” said Karen Friedman, policy director at the Pension Rights Center.

But Judy Miller of the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries argues that the deduction’s cost is wildly exaggerated. Adjust for the taxes paid when retirees withdraw money and the cost is cut in half.

And, she says, the break is more progressive than some allege. Among other things, high earners who get a bigger tax break going in end up paying more in taxes when they take the money out.

“Contrary to the common myth, the tax incentives are not upside down at all,” she said at the Senate hearing.

Plus, the current system has led to an explosion in retirement savings, with 401(k)s now holding about $4.7 trillion in assets and IRAs $4.9 trillion.

Still, proposals to cut the deduction and make it more “fair” seem to be gaining traction in Washington, including the White House.

One idea pitched at the Senate hearing is to replace the entire tax deduction with a flat government match of 18% to 30%. The Brookings Institution’s William Gale, who helped develop the idea, says if the credit were set at 18%, it would boost tax revenues by $458 billion over 10 years, mostly from wealthier workers.

President Obama’s debt commission proposed cutting the annual cap on 401(k) employer/employee combined contributions to $20,000 from $49,000 now. (The individual limit is $16,500 a year; workers age 50 and older can add another $5,000).

WASHINGTON – Pinal County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Steve Henry said Wednesday that when his deputies go to the border they face a situation similar to a warzone in Afghanistan or Iraq.

“The fact that everybody we encounter, almost, is armed. The only difference is that we don’t exchange shots with them most of the time,” Henry said after speaking to a panel in Washington.

Henry was joined by sheriffs from around the country as part of a discussion panel hosted by the Center for Immigration Studies, an independent organization that advocates for limits on legal and illegal immigration, and the House Immigration Reform Caucus.

Many of those speakers blamed what they called the Obama administration’s lax enforcement of border and immigration laws for the problems they are seeing in their communities, many of which are far removed from the border.

The sheriffs, who also came from Iowa, North Carolina and Maryland, said that because drugs are a problem in their communities it is important that immigration officials support them in their efforts to enforce immigration laws.

Rockingham County, N.C., Sheriff Sam Page said that he has seen an increase of crimes by undocumented immigrants in his community.

“What I tell my deputies is that the problems you see at the border, and you think it’s coming, it’s already here,” Page said.

Henry, referring to drug traffickers pushing drugs through the U.S.-Mexico border, said sheriffs “have terrorists in our own backyard.”

Henry and the other sheriffs agreed that two federal initiatives – Secure Communities and the 287(g) program – have been beneficial for their counties, but that there is room for improvement.

Both programs partner immigration officials with local law enforcement agencies to help identify undocumented immigrants when they have been arrested for the other crimes. Both programs have been credited with contributing to the deportations of record numbers of undocumented immigrants.

“There is a lot of hoops and layers that you have to jump through to (use) 287(g),” Henry said. “Overall we’re happy with it, it’s better than nothing.”

But both programs have been heavily criticized by pro-immigrant activists who say that, instead of targeting criminals, the programs target undocumented immigrants who have not been convicted of crimes.

Some critics have even said that these programs have made it less likely that people in immigrant communities will report crimes out of fear of being deported.

Henry calls that “a disingenuous argument.”

“The reality of things is that it doesn’t affect our relationship,” with immigrant communities, he said.

Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, said that while the sheriffs at Wednesday’s panel expressed satisfaction that federal officials have been partnering with their departments, he does not take the Obama administration seriously when it comes to enforcing immigration laws.

“I’m not going to believe that this administration is serious about cracking down on illegal immigration,” said King who was representing the House Immigration Reform Caucus on the panel.

“There isn’t anything in the next year … that President Obama could do to convince me that he has actually changed his mind,” King said.

The Department of Homeland Security declined to respond Wednesday to King’s charges, instead pointing to a speech on border security that Secretary Janet Napolitano gave last week in Washington.

“We have committed unprecedented resources to this effort and, this year, will see yet again a historic drop in illegal crossings and more and more contraband seized,” Napolitano said then. “So let’s take the ‘border is out control myth’ out of the equation.”

EL ARISH, Egypt — Large caches of weapons from Libya are making their way across the Egyptian border and flooding black markets in Egypt’s already unstable Sinai Peninsula, according to current and former Egyptian military officials and arms traders in the Sinai.

Egyptian security officials have intercepted surface-to-air missiles, most of them shoulder-launched, on the road to Sinai and in the smuggling tunnels connecting Egypt to the Gaza Strip since Moammar Gaddafi fell from power in Libya in August, a military official in Cairo said. Arms traders said the weapons available on Sinai’s clandestine market include rockets and antiaircraft guns.

The seizures raise fresh concerns about security along the sensitive area that borders the Gaza Strip and Israel, at a time when unrest is roiling the region. The addition of shoulder-fired antiaircraft missiles to arsenals of Palestinian fighters in Gaza could add significantly to the threat against Israel, whose helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft frequently patrol the strip, which is controlled by the militant Islamist group Hamas.

“We don’t want to see Egypt as a pathway to smuggle weapons,” said Sameh Seif el-Yazal, a retired Egyptian general in military intelligence who said several surface-to-air missiles have been intercepted on the desert road from Libya to the Egyptian city of Alexandria and north on to Gaza. “We believe some Palestinian groups made a deal with Libyans to get special weapons such as shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles.”

Concerns about security in the Sinai have been growing in Egypt and among Israeli and American officials, who have called on Egypt to do more to protect the sensitive area, which borders the Gaza Strip and Israel. In the months since Egypt’s January-February revolution, the pipeline that feeds natural gas to Israel has been attacked seven times by militants. A cross-border attack by assailants in August killed eight Israeli civilians and prompted an Israeli counterstrike that killed six Egyptian troops, including three who later died of their wounds

Palestinian militants in Gaza command a potent arsenal that includes surface-to-surface missiles capable of striking deep inside Israel. But they are not known to have employed more than rudimentary antiaircraft weapons.

Resistance by Bedouins

The vastness of the Sinai, with its deserts and mountains, poses a major challenge to efforts by Egyptian authorities to maintain security there. In recent months, Egypt has sent reinforcements, bringing the number of troops on the peninsula to 20,000, but it has struggled to gain control in an area governed by tribal customs and populated primarily by Bedouins, who distrust the government and call the shots.

A security official and an Egyptian brigadier general who served recently in the Sinai said the seizures have included ammunition, explosives, automatic weapons and caches of heavier arms, including Russian-made Strela-2 and Strela-3 heat-seeking, shoulder-fired antiaircraft missiles.

“We’ve intercepted more advanced weapons, and these weapons aren’t familiar to the Egyptian weapons markets; these are war weapons,” said the brigadier general, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

U.S. officials are concerned that some of Libya’s vast trove of shoulder-fired antiaircraft missiles could end up in the hands of terrorists, who could use them against civilian jets. Gaddafi’s government had up to 20,000 of the missiles, according to U.S. estimates, and American authorities are working with Libya’s provisional government to track down what happened to them. Although thousands were thought to be destroyed in NATO bombing raids during the conflict this year, many missiles apparently were looted from unguarded warehouses in the chaos of the Libyan uprising.

The 1979 peace treaty between Egypt and Israel imposes strict limits on Egypt’s military presence in the Sinai, but Israel has signaled an openness to further troop increases there because of concerns about cross-border attacks and smuggling. Many Bedouins rely on smuggling as their main source of livelihood, delivering food, cement and other commodities to Gaza — which is under an Israeli blockade — for cash, even as Egyptian authorities have taken new steps to cut off the tunnels that lead into the zone.

The governor of northern Sinai, Maj. Gen. Abdel Wahab Mabrouk, could not be reached for comment, and the head of security in the peninsula, Maj. Gen. Saleh el-Masry, said he could not speak without special permission.

Here in northern Sinai, Bedouin tribes have long felt marginalized and neglected by the government. They point to the dozens of schools in their area with no teachers, the hospitals with no doctors and the lack of government protection as examples of the past regime’s neglect. They were also targeted and abused by police after attacks by religious extremists on tourist resorts in the Sinai in 2004 and 2005.

“There is a real kind of bitterness with the police,” said Yazal, the retired general. “North Sinai was completely ignored by the past regime for decades. They feel like second-class citizens.“

This feeling of vulnerability has created a strong motivation among Bedouins to take their security into their own hands by buying more weapons, which many fear will further destabilize the tense region.

Fears about safety, Islamists

Just a few miles from the Gaza border in Rafah, a Bedouin arms dealer known as Abu Ahmed said that weapons smuggling has been easy since Egypt’s 18-day uprising and that the Libyan unrest next door has created a virtually open border. Antiaircraft 14.5mm machine guns are readily available, he said. Shoulder-fired Stinger-like antiaircraft missiles also are available, he said, and their price has dropped from $10,000 to $4,000 because there are so many in the market.

Abu Ahmed estimates that the number of armed people in the Sinai has doubled in recent months, noting that the Bedouin tribes are stockpiling weapons in case the uprising that ousted President Hosni Mubarak does not succeed and the police try to target them again.

“Tribal leaders buy in bulk for the tribe and then sell what they don’t need,” he said.

Although there is no well-
defined armed Islamist movement in the peninsula, fliers have been distributed in the name of al-Qaeda in the Sinai calling for an Islamic emirate. In July, armed men carrying the black flags of holy war drove through the streets and attacked a police station in El Arish. A militant Islamist group known as Takfir wal-Hijra has a fledgling presence in the Sinai.

Egyptian officials have asked Sinai residents to register their weapons, but those requests are derided in a region where the authorities are mistrusted.

“If everything was safe and secure, I would register my weapons,” said Waleed, a Bedouin in his 20s who insisted he be identified only by his first name. He said he had bought an antiaircraft gun for $15,000, partly for security and partly because it looked cool, then mounted it on his Land Cruiser. “But, right now, we don’t know. My home, my business and the women of our family are everything to us, and we have to secure ourselves.”

Joint investigation by Chicago Tribune and WGN-TV finds at least eight labor leaders stand to get pensions from both the city and union for the same time period

A labor leader in Chicago is expected to receive pension payments of nearly $500,000 a year, while another could get about $438,000 a year, according to reports Wednesday.

The Chicago Tribune and WGN-TV, which obtained information about union pension benefits during a joint investigation, said at least eight union officials in Chicago were eligible for what were described as inflated city pensions on top of union pensions for the same period of employment.

The news organizations said this was due to “a charitable interpretation” of Illinois law by officials representing two city pension funds.

“Can you name any place in the world where someone can get two pensions for the same job?” state Rep. Tom Cross, a Republican, told the paper. “Even by our standards here in Illinois, it’s beyond belief. It’s insane.”

Chicago and Illinois are facing financial trouble, in part due to pension shortfalls.

On Tuesday, state Sen. Mark Kirk released a report on Illinois’ debt that said it had the worst credit rating of any state and that its debt was rising, NBC Chicago reported.

Kirk said the state was nearly insolvent and said he doubted there would be any help from Washington.
